Been annoyed by Thunderbird's search of emails for ages now. This add on makes it perfect and fast as well.

I can finally get my search results unthreaded and sorted the way I want, with zero clicking! Definitely 5 stars for making this possible.
There are some rough edges, the options dialog isn't super clear but gets the job done. Disabling the threaded view only works if you select the "Thread" column to be visible - a bit funny that it has to be visible in order to make it redundant, but hey, I'll accept anything to get rid of the threaded view!
Kudos to the author who fixed a small issue pretty much the same day when I first reported it.
Romkyns coming through again. I've fixed the 'disable thread only if visible' problem, expect v2.1c soon. Also, you can now sort by columns that aren't visible (which seems weird to me, but I suppose it's better to make everything possible).

Fantastic. Does exactly as promised. The only logical search results format is a simple list which is what this provides. Thundebird's standard format is horrible and there's no conceivable justification for its existence.

The default TB mail search is dreadful, and leaving me cursing every time I used it. I just wanted to see the results as a list, period, without any other nonsense.
Thank you for making this happen!!!

very nice. Can't live with the regular TB search aymore. duh.
Just wish the prefs interface was clearer

Wonderful addon: finally a useful way to view search results.
But it stoppod working for TB 30...
---- update ----
Sorry, my mistake: it's TB 24.6.0 (I've checked FF version...)
I think I've found the problem, thanks to a previous comment: it was some kind of conflict with Contact Tab extension. Removing it (it' useless in last TB version) Search list works as expected! Thanks
Hi gLf, thanks for the review, and the heads-up on the Beta version. My daily use is on the Release channel so I haven't experienced any dysfunction as of yet.
I did temporarily update to TB 31 and found that the search function worked properly with (the default) only "Show search-as-list tab" checked. Although I did notice that the location of the spinning search indicator might need some attention. Further, I was able to test the "Expression search" add-on and it seemed functional.
1. By "stopped working" do you mean that you get the faceted (old) view of results?
2. What OS are you using?
Thanks again for your help, without users like you add-ons like this couldn't exist.

Adds one of the most intuitive and useful enhancement to search which is otherwise horrible.

This is a great add-on, I've been using it for some time and it has saved me so much unnecessary clicking.
Unfortunately it stopped working yesterday, for no obvious reason. I've tried reinstalling it, but to no avail.
Where do I file a bug report? What can I do to help fix the problem?
------
Dear psoebr,
thanks for getting back to me!
1. Yes, I usually search from the "universal search box" (or whatever that search box is called that searches all folders), and with your plugin, the search tab would open as a list. But now I get the old search window again where I have to click on the "Open email as list" at the top before I can there.
2. I'm running Windows 7 Professional, Version 6.1 (Build 7601, Service Pack 1).
3. I'll try your recommendation and get back to you.
4. Thunderbird version is 24.5.0, Search as List version is 2.1a.
-----------
OK, I think I've found the culprit. I first tried different versions of Search as List, back to v 1.2a, but this didn't help. Then I remember that I had in fact installed a new addon, rikaichan, the other day, I deactivated it, and hey presto Search as List works fine again.
Now if necessary I can live without rikaichan (it's a plugin that provides translations of Japanese words automatically in a pop-up window when you hover above a term with the mouse), or at least I prefer to be able to use Search as List. But if at some point you could find the time to look into this issue, I'd be very grateful!
Hi Homoludens1000:
1. By "stopped working" do you mean that you get the faceted (old) view of results?
2. What OS are you using?
3. Have you tried installing a previous version of the add-on from "http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/search-as-list/versions/"?
4. What version of Thunderbird are you using?
As of now there are no other reports of problems. That being said, I'll do what I can to help get it working again.

Excellent and much needed add-on. But... I have a similar problem to oscerl. I'd like to save "Show Columns" in the preferences - except there's no "Save" or"Cancel" buttons… so I can't save it. I also can't save the column layout using the "Apply columns to" as described, because the button for "Search List" isn't sitting properly; I can only choose "Folder" or "Folder and its children".
On Mac OS 10.8.
Edit following psoebr's reply:
Brilliant! Works perfectly for me now :) Thanks so much for such a rapid fix.
Hi Starlight. Thanks for reporting this bug as I haven't done extensive testing on a Mac. For now I've forced an 'Apply' button to display at the bottom of the options dialog in v2.1a which should be released sometime today. Clicking the 'Apply' button will save your preferences.
The 'Apply to...' context menu problem will take a bit more work and time. I'll mark it as an open bug.
Thanks again.

Wonderful idea, the add-on works well, except one thing.
When I enter its Preferences in the Add-ons manager, make changes and click Close, these changes are not saved. The change I would like to make is to view the Search list 'unthreaded' by default, which I understand should be possible by changing the value of the topmost radio button in the Columns tab.
However, as I wrote, these changes do not 'take effect' at all, if I open the Preferences again they are back to deafault, and my Search list is still 'threaded'.
Is there a value I could change in the Config editor manually?
Thanks for a great add-on!
Hi Oscerl, I've tried to replicate your problem with no luck. Make sure you are clicking the OK button on the options dialog after changing your preferences. There is a way to edit the value in the config:editor >> extensions.search-as-list.colClick >> must include threadCola in the list of comma separated values... for example if you wanted unthreaded, date sorted (descending) results you would use 'threadCola, dateCold,' Please note that there is no space between the comma separated values.
Alternatively, you can use the 'Apply columns to' feature described in the add-on description. That way you can apply any layout directly to your search results by selecting Apply columns to... >> Search as list in the column selection context menu.
Let us know if this worked for you.

Hi,
I'm the maintainer of 'Expression Search/GmailUI'.
klint said "Because I have noted that we the TB default "Global Search" field is not displayed on any bar, pressing Shift+Enter on a criteria in ExpressionSearch field does not launch the search at all. On the contrary, when I add the "Global search" field to the top bar, then pressing Shift+Enter works correctly."
The reason it's conflict with 'Expression Search/GmailUI' is because this addon expect the element 'searchaslist-indicator' was show when gloda was launched, but it's not true if gloda was launched NOT by the gloda search box. In such case, you will get error
"Error: document.getElementById(...) is null
Source file: chrome://search-as-list/content/overlay.js
Line: 105
"
Hi Wang:
I've just started using your 'Expression Search/GmailUI' and it is excellent.
Thank you for clarifying this matter for me. In the next release I've fixed the indicator so that it will show up within the active search element (input).
Too many permutations.
Thanks again for your help.

HelloVery useful addon, thanks a lot.I have some trouble using it with the Expression Search though: I'm hiding the Global search field and i'm using the Expression Search field to launch Gloda searches (Shift+Enter). But Gloda search won't run anymore when Search as List is installed.
Hi Drew
Thanks for you reply.
I have actually setup Expression Search correctly for Shift+Enter and I'm with Search-as-list acting as you describe.. when it works :)Because I have noted that we the TB default "Global Search" field is not displayed on any bar, pressing Shift+Enter on a criteria in ExpressionSearch field does not launch the search at all. On the contrary, when I add the "Global search" field to the top bar, then pressing Shift+Enter works correctly. Nothing shows up in the console. Strange isn't it?
Klint:
UPDATE: The dev. of Expression Search / GMailUI 0.8.7 clarified this matter for me. In the next release I've fixed the indicator so that your search-as-list functionality will return.
Too many permutations.

After some testing I've found that Search-as-list (and options) act on Expression Search / GMailUI 0.8.7 Shift+Enter queries. Basically any faceted view will get replaced by the Search-as-list configuration. Please note: "Enable Gloda search and Indexer" found in TB options >> Advanced >> General >> Advanced Configuration must be active at TB startup for Shift+Enter to work in Expression Search / GMailUI 0.8.7.For clarity, what would you like to happen when you hold perform a Shift+Enter query using Expression Search / GMailUI?
Thanks

I cannot see in pop-up menu string "Search as list" as I see in https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/img/uploads/previews/full/122/122692.png?modified=1389758913 :(
May be it is because my Thunderbird in Russian or under Xubuntu?
Nick.
That feature will be released with v2.0 which is currently under full review and should be released soon. It is not a problem with Xubuntu or your language.
If v2.0 is not released by the weekend I will try to expedite the process by having v2.0 switched to preliminary review.
Thanks for the updated rating. I am glad it now works on your Xubuntu system.

This is brilliant, thank you so much!!
The old disorderly rich text global search results cause me so much anguish every time, and this has made it clean and sane again!
Would there be any possibility of an extra add-on option to return results unthreaded?
Cheers,
david

David.
I took your suggestion into account for v2.0 which is under review and should be approved soon. You will be able to toggle the Thread column and custom sort any other columns via the options/preferences dialog.
Thanks for the suggestion.

This works well, does what it says and is a feature so so lacking form the basic Thunderbird as to make its search almost useless. Finally it is useful. It can go one step better though (next version?) and remember the columns set in the result or somehow allow us to specify the columns in the search result as I always as a first step still need to add Account and Location.

For years all I wanted was my search results displayed by default as a list, and today the heavens opened up and the great goddess of the ozone-friendly chocolate chip cookie reached down with her five arms and delivered it to me. Thank You!!!
