This worked after a few tries where the old extension failed: 24000+ messages where 90% were duplicates.

really helpful, it we should not be stopped in development. Required feature is: remove of duplicates automatically each time after mail download

0.3 seems to work for me. Even found some message more than the original version. And finally I'm able to permanently delete the messages, Thx a lot!

Great extension, but this new update makes a ridiculously long right click context menu.
What's this
"Set original message folder(s) for next duplicate search" ???
Back to the previous version for me.
The phrasing is a bit awkward, but I couldn't find a way to make it both shorter and clearly understandable. I'll try to shorten it somehow.

Great! I still have one recipient that has duplicates entries but at least I got rid of all the others. Great Job. Is there a way to put your extension (change the name for istance) to make it more visible for people looking for a real answer to this annoyance ?
Thanks a lot

I tried the original "Remove Duplicate Messages" add on to attempt to remove about 2 thousand duplicates in a large IMAP folder after a mail migration. A horrible experience when it actually started creating multiple emails in the trash IMAP folder - 48 thousand of them until I had to forcibly kill TBird!!
Installed this alternate one and it had many more features, and quite simply just worked! Excellent - thank you so much!
I did get a "script has stopped responding" error which I just clicked continue through, but no complaints from me.

I really like this add-on, and seems extremely fast as long as the message body is not included.
I just wanted to add to the "keep deepest" message. It does seem that when one sorts by folder, a shallower folder will always precede a deeper folder. However, it would be great to get a confirmation of this, since then one could be quite confident that sorting by folders and keeping the last message would result in keeping all the painstakingly sorted messages one has, and deleting the ones that one has redownloaded into the inbox.

First off, a great big thanks! I agree, its much faster than the original. There is one missing feature... The ability to search or select sub-folders first. I have many duplicates between organized folders and my sent folder (among others!). This can certainly be worked around manually, but it would be great if there was a method to prefer "deeper" sub folders over higher level folders. Nonetheless, thanks a million for reviving this extension!
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (0.2.1).... as the folder traversal is asynchronous. I'm even hoping to parallelize it with some background threads, if Javascript threading becomes more usable. So there's no 'first' and 'last'.
What you could do is choose to display the folder column in the review dialog and sort by it.

Works perfectly here without stability or performances problems so far. Feature request: is there a way to silency run this plugin when getting new mail ?

Works great with large folders -- AND it's blazing fast. Keep up the good work!

I had just recently tried to setup IMAP thru googles new IMAP service and noticed all of my email disappeared from google. Thankfully I made a backup prior to messing with this IMAP feature.
After importing all of the email (messing up the import several times) from my Backup, I literally had multiple copies of emails everywhere! My filters were going bonkers trying to sort all this email. It was going to take me hours to go thru and find all the duplicates by hand.
I did a search for any duplicate email remover and found this wonderfull thunderbird Add-on. After I installed it, I right clicked my "Local Folders" folder and clicked Remove Duplicates, This couldn't have been any simpler!
This really should be a feature built into all email clients, but especially thunderbird.
You have saved me sooo much time, you have no idea!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You're the best!

This was a lifesaver for me. I had a mailbox with 60,000 messages in it, about 10,000 of which were duplicates. This tool solved all my problems.
I ran it once on a mailbox without about 30,000 messages, and it worked flawlessly after I clicked through a "stopped script" dialog.
It ran less smoothly on the mailbox with 60K messages...it hung up and then crashed (exited) Thunderbird. But, I restarted the system and re-installed the extension and it worked...as long as I clicked through a bunch of "stopped script" dialogs and then ultimately clicked "stop", which dropped me into the review dialog. I then moved to trash, rather deleting outright, because deleting outright had also crashed Thunderbird.
All that said, I am so grateful for this tool. I didn't expect it to be able to process 60K messages at all, so the fact that I was able to get through it with just a few hiccups was a relief.
If you can e-mail me (or use savefile.com) an mbox file which triggers such a crash, or instructions on how to generate one, it would be most helpful. Although, in all fairness, it can't really be my fault, as JavaScript code (specifically, my code) should not be able to crash Thunderbird even if I tried - it's all sandboxed...

This newer version, which works with Thunderbird 2+, allows you to CHOOSE what version of the duplicate e-mail you want to keep!!!
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!

My laptop was accidentally destroyed and I had to rebuild my email from various backups and copies stored on other machines.
The plugin was absoluetly brilliant - there was one bug (which I manged to work around) but I let Eyal know and he fixed in a matter of days.

Very good, it does the job on all types of directories (IMAP, Local, etc).
Waiting for the release to include options for removing duplicates in Sent folders, which i know is not included on purpose.
Keep it up!
Use the hidden
removedupes.mail.allowed_special_folders
preference to decide which special folders (Sent, Drafts etc.) may be searched for dupes rather than being ignored.

I used this add-on and liked the way it presented the duplicates. If there are more than two, you see them all and can choose which one to keep. The default has always been correct

First, this is an excellent job, with a very well designed and ergonomic UI with too many small nice things to note. The old Remove Duplicate Messages (doesn't work at all) and Advanced Remove Duplicates (found a lot of misses) can be replaced. I found hundreds of old dupes in the Engadget rss feed (9500 items) which were not found otherwise. Tested in Tb2.0.0.5pre.
Some nits:
1. #Lines column is not sizeable, all others are fine.
2. If a folder is not selected, yet right clicked and Remove Duplicates selected, and the summary file is not built, then nothing happens. Should rebuild summary in this case. Yes, this is an extremely fine point.. (Summaries gone seems to be due to sharing a Tb profile between win and linux file system.)
3. Selecting Message ID column and window/column positions/sizes are not remembered across dialog closes.
5. #Lines is not printed (nice double check even if it's not a selected dupe detection option).
Suggestion:
1. It would be nice if in the Duplicate Messages Deletion dialog, selecting of a message there would have the effect of selecting it in Tb.
2. Move the Delete permanently checkbox above the columns; this way the box size can be styled for max size just with css (and not js).
It would be great to see this officially reviewed by AMO and released.
