With Thunderbird 68 just use RBTray.
It's a small Windows open source program that runs in the background and allows almost any window to be minimized to the system tray by right clicking its minimize button.
Tried it and works perfectly and only takes 2 mb memory.

Please update for the latest Thunderbird,
since the developers are too stubborn to integrate it (and at the same time make it more difficult for addon creators).

Pourriez-vous porter cette extenssion ou une extenssion similaire sur TB 68 s'il vous plait ? Celle-ci, en l'état actuel, ne fonctionne plus sur la dernière version de TB. Merci d'avance.

PLEASE make it work with the new Thunderbird 68!
I'de be happy to donate if you provide something like a paypal link. Couldn't find anything like this on the github page.
Hope the Thunderbird developers will include this feature natively. This is a must-have for any Email client.

Does not work with version 68

It works fine, but I would love to see one additional function - choosing my custom icon (PNG). All my panel icons are monochrome, so the default Thunderbird one looks very out of place now.

The extension works as advertised, with one major detractor. You can not send emails with the extension installed.

Thanks a lot! I have missed this functionality so much and wish it would work for Firefox, too.

Finally!
I had to use a ridiculous solution with Windows tasks to make sure I still see new mails after closing Thunderbird.
I'm glad I can use this plugin again.
